St Clements Surgery
The new St Clements Surgery provides 1600m² of general practice medical space and community services, in the heart of Winchester.
Its location, within a historic setting and amongst buildings of varying scales, presented many challenges. The solution was to create a stepped form, reducing in height from the commercially scaled Friarsgate frontage, down to the smaller, residential scale of Upper Brook Street.

Clinical spaces are arranged around an internal, double height waiting area, which reduces the requirement for corridors, and provides easy wayfinding for visiting patients. The waiting room looks directly on to an enhanced public realm, with the entrance set back from the road edges, creating breathing space in a City Centre location. The building is zoned by function, to minimise circulation, and the ground floor can function independently as a walk-in surgery for out of hours services.
The design employs a simple palette of materials, predominantly buff brick, combined with a lightweight, polycarbonate-clad rooftop element to the north wing, housing staff spaces and a private balcony.
