Four Winds
ArchitecturePLB worked with Opus Blue on proposals to redevelop the former Four Winds Inn and Garage site in Falmouth Cornwall. After a planning application for a student housing scheme on the site was rejected, ArchitecturePLB developed a new scheme for an elderly care home for 86 residents. This development was more in keeping with the local residential area and outline planning permission was granted in 2017.
The scheme was designed to create enjoyable internal and external spaces for the residents whilst ensuring the scheme was economically viable for the developer. The layout allowed for the majority of the rooms to be south, east or west facing, with sun coming into an external courtyard.

The plan is broken up by day rooms which absorb the circulation space and ensure that excessively long corridors are avoided. The day rooms are also associated with a small cluster of rooms, giving the opportunity for residents to personalise these spaces and give them a more homely feel. Each day room is served by a nurses station, storage and accessible bathrooms and WCs.
The scheme proposals retain the site’s extensive trees on three sides which will help screen the building from the surrounding area. A series of enjoyable external amentiry spaces have been created for residents who will spend the majority of their time on the site.
