Artemis Academy

ArchitecturePLB is delivering a new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities school for The Gallery Trust on the site of the former Faringdon Infant School. Working with main contractor Tilbury Douglas, we are creating a purpose-designed 104-place facility for students aged 7-18 with diagnoses including Autism Spectrum Condition, Social Emotional Mental Health needs, and Cognition and Learning difficulties, opening in January 2027. Situated on the site of the former Faringdon Infant School, the project involves the demolition of existing buildings and construction of a purpose-built facility that responds sensitively to its location adjacent to the town's Conservation Area.

The two-storey L-shaped building positions specialist spaces including the Assembly Hall, Dining Area and The Gallery therapeutic base along the street frontage, presenting these community-focused facilities to the wider town while creating a welcoming identity for the school. The teaching spaces are carefully arranged to represent a pupil's educational journey from primary through KS3 and KS4 to Post 16, culminating in a dedicated sixth form social space.

The design embraces The Gallery Trust's commitment to community engagement, with several spaces identified as potential assets of community value. The Dining Space, Hall and Games Court have been strategically positioned to enable use by both the wider SEND community and local community in Faringdon, while maintaining appropriate security and fire safety strategies.

The scheme includes car parking spaces with electric vehicle charging provision, a games court, extensive landscaping with biodiversity net gain, and retention of the existing woodland and pond, delivering a sustainable, accessible facility that integrates positively with the local community.

Artemis Academy exemplifies ArchitecturePLB commitment to delivering inclusive, sustainable educational facilities that respond sensitively to their context while meeting the complex needs of specialist education. The scheme provides an important new resource for the SEND community in South West Oxfordshire, reducing travel distances for pupils and delivering a purpose-designed environment where children can learn and thrive.
