The brief for this edge-of-town-centre site is reflective of the difficulty facing many local authorities, whereby there is a need for small apartments, particularly 1 bed units. In this instance, a proportion of the site is given over to temporary accommodation where it is acknowledged that occupants will only live there for a short period of time before being re-homed somewhere else on a permanent basis.

The challenging site included two large, protected trees and also sat on the transition between the town centre and the surrounding residential areas, while also sharing a boundary with a public car park. Prior to ArchitecturePLB's involvement, the site had a chequered planning history, with a number of previous applications either having been withdrawn or refused.
Our proposal created two blocks, one containing the general needs affordable housing, formed around a single core; the other containing the temporary accommodation which was formed as a terrace of ‘houses’. Each house contains two 1 bed flats, each with their own front door, with the first floor being a walk-up apartment. It was felt that isolating the access in this way would reduce potential friction between residents, while the ‘house’ form gives flexibility for the future should the units needs to be converted to a more conventional form of housing.
