Hythe Hospital Housing

ArchitecturePLB worked with New Forest District Council to design 22 affordable homes adjacent to the site of our Hythe and Dibden War Memorial Hospital. The scheme rationalises this part of the NHS estate, combining essential healthcare facilities with much-needed housing.

The development responds to the challenging topography of the 0.74-hectare site, which falls over 8.5 metres from north to south, whilst preserving the extensive mature trees that form part of the site's designated Landscape Feature status. We developed a layout that respects the hierarchy of the neighbouring Health Centre, creating a coherent collection of buildings that subtly reference the historic relationship between the former country house hospital and its outbuildings.

The scheme comprises two three-storey apartment blocks positioned to frame the entrance, stepping back from Beaulieu Road to create animation and interest whilst maintaining privacy for residents. The buildings feature lower rooflines and carefully oriented roof forms to remain secondary to the civic scale of the Health Centre. Five terraced and semi-detached houses extend into the site, feathering the massing down towards Fawley Road and creating a pedestrian-focused 'homezone' at the heart of the development. A central play area and enhanced woodland amenity space provide public open space, whilst the material palette of red and buff brick with standing seam zinc roofs creates a refined contemporary appearance that relates to both the new Health Centre and the wider residential context.
