Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre

ArchitecturePLB is working alongside Southampton City Council, and Morgan Sindall Construction as main contractor, to deliver the redevelopment of Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre, transforming this cherished sporting destination with a major programme of improvements targeted for completion in early 2027.

At the heart of the scheme is a new Community Hub building, providing a gym and fitness suite, café with external landscape terrace, flexible multi-use rooms for sporting clubs and community activities plus two covered courts for netball and tennis, enabling year-round usage and maximising the building's versatility. The design reflects our commitment to providing an efficient, robust and sustainable building, featuring textured brickwork as a unifying material, with generous overhanging roof canopies supported on slender painted steel columns. The Hub incorporates accessible changing facilities and presents a welcoming principal façade toward the external sports facilities, creating a strong connection between building and landscape.

Across the wider site, our work includes the design of a new Athletics pavilion with grandstand seating, an upgraded Snowsports Centre, and enhanced provision for cricket, hockey and football, including three new floodlit artificial grass pitches. The project represents a significant investment in Southampton's sporting infrastructure, backed by funding from the government's Levelling Up Fund and the Football Foundation, and demonstrates our ability to deliver complex, multi-building sports facilities that respond sensitively to their context while meeting the highest standards of functionality, accessibility and sustainability.
