An underused courtyard has been cleverly remodelled into this vibrant social learning space, known as the Lightwell Café. On a tight urban site where opportunities for campus development are limited, the fitout at the heart of this 1930s building has opened up the campus both physically and socially. Flexible spaces have been created by connecting to the surrounding library, museum and dining facilities. A semi-enclosed reading 'pod' creates a dramatic focus at the centre.

University of Lleida, Spain
Completed 2002
Contract Value £6m
Client University of Lleida
This new 8800sqm faculty building for the University of Lleida was won through an international design competition. Lleida's innovative curriculum translated into an equally innovative design solution, with flexible lecture theatres and teaching organised around a four-storey central atrium, and central administration, dining and student services at lower and upper ground. With inspiration taken from the Basque sculptor, Chilida, the form and massing of the building also accommodates a wide climatic range while minimising energy demand.

Buildings and campuses have an increasingly important influence on student applications as well as being significant in attracting and retaining the best academic staff. Facilities need to accommodate the needs of a wide range of users and a variety of activities, many with complex technical requirements.
At ArchitecturePLB we are practiced at working with diverse stakeholder groups, developing briefs and design solutions that balance the varied needs and concerns of different parties. We enjoy bringing our engagement skills, expertise and creativity to the design of technically demanding facilities. These have included laboratories, surgical suites, workshops and studios, as well as social and amenity spaces.
